Hafeez and Nauman ensure victory

Sports Correspondent

November 29, 2002

An all-round performance by Muhammad Hafeez and half centuries by Naumanullah and Sufian Munir helped PCB Reds to win the Super League One-day Ramazan Cup beating PCB Whites by five wickets in the final at the Gaddafi Stadium Thursday.

Set the target of 224 in 50 overs PCB Reds scored 226 for five with six overs to spare. Opener Hafeez (46) with Sufian laid a strong foundation for the win by collecting 87 runs for the second-wicket.

Both, Hafeez and were removed within the space of five runs but Naumanullah with a blazing unbeaten 55- ball 50 knock made the task easy.

Naumanullah dropped by Riffatullah at mid-wicket off Zahid Saeed when he was two with the total being 135 took full advantage. However, Hafiz Khalid (12) hit the winning stroke, lifting Qaiser to mid-wicket for a boundary. Naumanullah struck eight fours.

Hafeez with Naumanullah was declared as joint Man-of-the-Match and shared a cash prize of Rs10,000.

Put into bat, PCB Whites ran into an early trouble losing opener Moin Khan (8) and next man Riffatullah (0) with total 29. However, other opener Shadab Kabir and best batsman of the tournament Farhan Adil revived the innings with thirdwicket stand of 82.

After their departure only Naved Latif was the key scorer with 29 as the entire innings had been wrapped up for 223 in 49.3 overs.

Farhan scored painstaking 82-ball 57 with four strokes to the fence. Shadab played a responsible knock of 46 containing five boundaries.
