"We believe that the proposal we submitted is the fairest possible way of allocating teams to the two pools for the 2003 Cricket World Cup. The system is based on each team's percentage wins in One-Day Internationals from the end of the 1999 World Cup to the end of September 2001. The reason for this cut-off date is that it is our intention to announce the programme of matches in October 2001," said Dr Ali Bacher, the Executive Director of the 2003 Cricket World Cup.
At the end of each month until September, the current percentage wins of each team as well as the pool allocations as they fall according to each month's standings will be released. The Percentage wins and pool allocations as at 13 February 2001 are attached.
The ICC has agreed to the teams being allocated on the following basis:
Pool A Pool B
Team 1 Team 2
Team 4 Team 3
Team 5 Team 6
Team 8 Team 7
Team 9 Team 10
Team 12 Team 11
Team 13 Team 14
This system ensures that Team 1 has the advantage of being pooled with Team 4, and so on. The other three teams which will join the system will be known after the ICC Associate Members Trophy in July 2001.
