Black's best takes West Indies to crushing victory over Kenya

CricInfo

August 6, 2001

The West Indies have completed a crushing innings and 47-run defeat on Kenya in Nairobi in the first game of their tour.

Marlon Black was the chief destroyer, claiming the figures of 6-35 to send Kenya reeling to 134 all out in their second innings.

Yet the day had started well for the hosts. Ramnaresh Sarwan added just eight to his overnight total before he was caught and bowled by Martin Suji for 108, and Shivnarine Chanderpaul could add only two to his overnight total before being dismissed for 46, caught by David Obuya off the bowling of Thomas Odoyo.

But Courtney Browne struck an unbeaten 52 while adding 71 for the sixth wicket with Dave Mohammed (26), before West Indies declared at lunch on 414 for 7, a lead of 181.

Kenya were soon in trouble as they batted to save the game. Black had openers, James Kamande and Kennedy Otieno back in the pavilion with only 12 on the board. Otieno (4) slashed the fourth ball of the innings to substitute fielder Neil McGarrell at point. Kamande bagged a pair for the match. Black also claimed the prize wicket of Steve Tikolo, caught by Sarwan for 25.

Corey Collymore weighed in with 3-35 as Kenya were overwhelmed in just 48 overs for 134. After being 55 for 6, Kenya produced some spirited resistance late in the order, thanks mainly to the Suji brothers Martin (29) and Tony (17), along with Collins Omondi (also 17). In all, five Kenyan batsmen fell leg before wicket in their second innings.

The next game between the two teams is a four-day encounter, starting on Thursday in Mombasa.
