  • For the 83rd time,a tournament consisting of three or more teams was being played. By an odd coincidence it was also the 83rd ODI on Sri Lankan soil.
  • Galle International Stadium at Galle was hosting its first ODI. It thus became Sri Lanka's fourth venue (sixth ground) to host a ODI. ODI cricket has now been played on 118 venues and 132 grounds worldwide. Interestingly Galle would have been One-Day International cricket's 121st ground,but three matches were washed out without a ball being bowled in June 1998 during the Nidahas Trophy.
  • Former Sri Lankan leg-spinner Asoka deSilva was making his ODI umpiring debut. He became 15th Sri Lankan to stand in a ODI.
  • Sanath Jayasuriya's figures of 5 for 28 are the best by any Sri Lankan against Australia. It obliterates Upul Chandana's 4 for 35 at Colombo RP on 07 Sep 1996.
  • Jayasuriya's figures are also the best by a Sri Lankan captain against all countries. The previous best by a Sri Lankan captain was 4 for 23 by Ravi Ratnayeke against Bangladesh at Dhaka on 02 Nov 1998.

    • Jayasuriya has now taken 160 wickets from 183 matches at the end of this match, thus becoming the leading wicket-taker for Sri Lanka. He surpassed Muttiah Muralitharan's tally of 157 wickets from 115 matches.
  • When he dismissed Ricky Ponting,Romesh Kaluwitharana completed 50 stumpings in his ODI career. He became first wicketkeeper to do so.
  • Wicketkeeper Kaluwitharana made three stumpings during the match. It was only the fifth such instance in ODIs. The details:

    • Shane Warne, when dismissed Nuwan Zoysa, became the leading wickettaker for Australia in One-Day Internationals. It was his 204th wicket in ODIs and he surpassed Craig McDermott tally of 203 wickets.
  • Indika de Seram was making his ODI debut.He became 100th player to make an ODI appearance for Sri Lanka.
  • Jason Gillespie, making a comeback into Australian side after missing 58 matches, won Man of the Match award for the first time in his career. He became 62nd Australian (on 227th occasion) to win a MoM award.
  • Steve Waugh was leading Australia for the 50th time in a DI. He became third Australian after Allan Border (178) and Mark Taylor (67)and 19th in the world to do so.
  • By winning this match Australia has now played 8 successive matches without facing defeat.
