Final: England v South Africa at Lord's, 12 Jul 2003

Ball-by-Ball Commentary

Match State: Match start scheduled for 10.45am local time (9.45am GMT)

Good Morning! Its final time at Lord's in the NatWest Series, the
only question is which team. South Africa or England will prevail
        and hold their nerves best.
Both teams are in development and want to prove they are making
progress after poor showings in the recent World Cup.
On paper England have two wins over South Africa in this series out
of three head to head encounters but South Africa has struck form
        in recent games.
England has shown a fragile middle order but have come back
strongly after their loss first time out to Zimbabwe.
South Africa's problems are similar but Jacques Kallis is in fine
form but Herchelle Gibbs is yet to make an impact.
Playing at Lord's is pressure enough for any side and the sides are
evenly enough matched for either to come good on the day.
Most needed is a thrilling finale today with both teams going out
to prove that they have what it takes to win.
The weather is glorious (believe it or not!) so no need to worry
        about that but....
The toss has been won by England and Vaughan invited South Africa
to bat as he expects the new ball to help at the start.
The pitch looks good, very white with a few cracks and the only
help could be some initial seam and movement in the air.
       England have an unchanged side.
England team: 1 Marcus Trescothick, 2 Vikram Solanki, 3 Michael
Vaughan (capt), 4 Andrew Flintoff, 5 Anthony McGrath, 6 Rikki
Clarke, 7 Chris Read (wk), 8 Ashley Giles, 9 Richard Johnson, 10
        Darren Gough, 11 James Anderson.
For South Africa, Paul Adams is out and van Wyk comes in.
South Africa team: 1 Herschelle Gibbs, 2 Graeme Smith (capt), 3
Jacques Kallis, 4 Jacques Rudolph, 5 Martin van Jaarsveld, 6 Mark
Boucher (wk), 7 Shaun Pollock, 8 Andrew Hall, 9 Andre Nel, 10 MN
        van Wck, 11 Makhaya Ntini.

England got home in style by 7 wickets after their bowlers had done
well to bowl out South Africa for 107
Some poor shots helped but then while batting Solanki and Vaughan
made sure there was no chink shown for a fine win
Next is the test series and South Africa will need to think out a
strategy against this motivated England side
We hope you have enjoyed Wisden CricInfo's coverage of the NatWest
Series and we look forward to bringing the Test series to you
