first match of three between England and Pakistan. Today's is a
day-night affair at the Old Trafford.
There is a lot going on in English cricket as we have had a new
test ground come up and the new format Twenty20 Cup which has

England and Pakistan had a poor World Cup and have revamped their
squads. Both should be going all out to restablish themselves in
international cricket under new captains.
The ICC ODI table will also see a major swing upwards for England
if they manage to beat Pakistan handsomely in this short series
while Pakistan will be trying to firm up their number 3 ranking.
England's fresh new skipper is Michael Vaughan who has done well in
Tests and was rewarded with the captaincy of the ODI team.
The England squad includes as many as six uncapped players after
several seniors like Knight, Caddick and Hussain retired from one-
day cricket after the World Cup.
Just a few days ago Richard Johnson was forced to pull out with
knee trouble and Chris Read is still not ready after a thumb
injury. Then there was some doubt over Anthony McGrath who
collided with a boundary board in a warm-up match.
Pakistan has a brand new side too after many of their stars were
replaced by youngsters after a dismal showing in the World Cup.
In two earlier tournaments this new squad has pleased the
management with players like Misbah-ul-Haq, Mohammad Hafeez and
Yasir Hameed in form in the batting area and the fast bowlers too
have come up well led by Mohammad Sami and Umar Gul.
Shoaib Akhtar will have to sit this one out after his recent 2-
match ban for a ball-tampering offence but experienced allrounders
Abdul Razzaq and Azhar Mahmood are also ready.
The savvy Rashid Latif is in charge of the young squad and said
"The coach (Miandad) was a great batsman in the past and we are
trying to play the same as Miandad's type of innings, building one
rather than batting hard and trying to score at six
nd seven an over.
He added: "Cricket has changed since the World Cup. Only one team,
Australia, play aggressively in the first 15 overs. Others try to
keep wickets in hand and are happy with 45 or 50 runs in the first
15 overs then you can make 280.
Pakistan have played four warm-up games on this tour and won 3 out
of four with some of their batsmen getting into runs.
Vaughan confidently said, "We want to win,
We're inexperienced, and experience in one-day cricket especially
is a key ingredient, but I do expect us to win these games.
The toss has been won by England and they will bat first in the
daylight and we all know about batting seconf under lights in
England!
The weather is fine and play should start on time. And believe it
or not its 'balmy' in Manchester.
The pitch looks dry, hard and seems a good one for batting
according to the experts, the crowd has made Latif say "Its almost

After a frenetic start by England with both openers hitting lots of
boundaries wicket fell regularly for a good fightback by Pakistan
Solanki and Flintoff got into the 30's as did McGrath but a mixture
of spin and speed caused England problems
The pck of the bowlers for pakistan were Shoab Malik and Umar Gul
for the wickets but the spinners did the job for the skipper who
brought on Hafeez for the 6th over
The big question remains, can the Pak young batters come out and
overcome nerves and the lights etc to reach 205, we all know the
