Netherlands v Bermuda, ICC Intercontinental Cup, Pretoria, 4th day

Hemp completes double in run-spree

November 24, 2006

Netherlands 378 and 170 for 2 (ten Doeschate 100, Zuiderent 56*) drew with Bermuda 620 (Hemp 247*, Mukuddem 90, Outerbridge 80, Leverock 51)

David Hemp amassed a career-best 247 and Ryan ten Doeschate launched his second century of the match as Bermuda and Netherlands ended a run-filled encounter at Pretoria. Hemp's mammoth innings built a lead of 242 but Netherlands had few problems negotiating the closing stages of the final day.

Hemp, who was on 143 overnight, lost Saleem Mukuddem early on when he was caught behind for 90, but continued to receive excellent support from the lower order. Dave Leverock built a 157-ball 51 as the eighth-wicket pair added 132. Hemp, whose previous highest score in any first-class cricket was 186 not out for Warwickshire in 2001, reached his double century off 313 balls and still wasn't finished.

Kevin Hurdle, Bermuda's No. 11, hung around long enough for the final wicket to put on 50 with Hurdle himself managing four boundaries in his 29. Hemp remained unbeaten after facing 373 deliveries and Bermuda had passed Canada's total of 588 to set a new record for Intercontinental Cup matches.

An early strike for Mukuddem raised brief hopes of an exciting final session but the run-spree quickly continued as ten Doeschate again showed his class. His second ton took 116 balls as he struck eight fours and three sixes, adding 159 with Bas Zuiderent, before falling moments before the match ended.
