England wait on Jones

England face an anxious wait to see if Simon Jones will be fit for next month's fifth and final Test against Australia after he sat out the final day of England's thrilling win at Trent Bridge with an ankle injury.

Jones left the field on Saturday with the problem having led England's attack with five for 44 as Australia were bowled out for 218 in their first innings and made to follow-on for the first time in 17 years. He was later taken to hospital and returned to the ground with his foot encased in a surgical boot.

Jones took no part at all on Sunday as England bowled out Australia for 387 and then scraped home by three wickets to get the 129 they needed for victory and a 2-1 lead. However, Michael Vaughan admitted he would have batted with a runner if required.

England, in a statement issued after stumps on Sunday, said: "Simon will continue to undergo treatment this week on his injured right ankle. Scans carried out on the ankle have revealed an anterior impingement. Simon has been advised to rest by a specialist and will not be available for domestic cricket this week."

The ECB chief medical officer Dr Peter Gregory added: "We will review the injury prior to announcing the fifth Test squad. Anterior impingement causes soft tissue to be pinched between bones when the foot is brought up toward the shin and the treatment Simon undergoes this week will aim to reduce the inflammation in those soft tissues."

England have fielded the same eleven players in all four Ashes Tests this season. The last time the exact same England side appeared in all five matches of an Ashes series was over 100 years ago in Australia in 1884-85.
