William Henry Foulke, born at Dawley (Salop) on April 12, 1874, died in a private nursing-home in Sheffield on May 1. In 1900 he played in four matches for Derbyshire, making 65 runs with an average of 10.83, his highest innings being 53 v Essex at Leyton. He was the famous goalkeeper of Sheffield United, was 6ft 2½ins in height and very heavy --at least 25 stone - but always active.

Foulke's cricketing claim to fame was limited, but he was a footballing legend. He played for Sheffield United from 1893 to 1905 - making one appearance for England against Wales in 1897 - before being transferred to Chelsea for £20. He played one season there before moving on to Bradford City. He ended up working in a funfair sideshow on Blackpool beach, saving penalties. He died of pneumonia in 1916.
