The Sri Lanka cricket team was named as the recipients of the Spirit of Cricket Award at the ICC Awards 2007.

In the ICC World Cup 2007, Sri Lanka emerged runners-up having won eight of their ten matches before the rain hit final against Australia. Sri Lanka skipper Mahela Jayawardena was second in the run-up to the Player of the Tournament Award with 11 points.

Sri Lanka made history in Test cricket when skipper Mahela Jayawardena (374) and his deputy Kumar Sangakkara (287) set up a record 624-run partnership (the highest stand not only in Tests but in all first class matches) against South Africa in July 2006.

As for the players, Muttiah Muralitharan, named Leading Cricketer of the Year for 2006 by Wisden Cricketers' Almanac, is the world’s highest wicket-taker in Test cricket having overtaken Shane Warne in late 2007.
