1st Test: New Zealand v England at Christchurch, 13-17 Mar 2002

Ball-by-Ball Commentary

Match State: Day 1 start scheduled for 10:30am local time (2130 GMT)

welcome to Jade Stadium in Christchurch for the first National Bank
Series Test between New Zealand and England
it's a lovely sunny day here, an even layer of light cloud lines
the sky, but we're all ready for a start on time in pleasant
conditions, and it's threatening to heat up well later in the day
it's a rather green looking wicket, remembering that it's the
portable pitch in use for just the second time in a Test here, and
the third in New Zealand, but if it's anything like Jade Stadium
pitches in recent years, the look may well deceive as to what it
        will really play like
many a time in the past visiting captains have arrived here and
immediately chosen to bowl first, only to see the home team rack
up a truckload of runs and virtually play them out of the game -
the portable pitch may be different however
New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming has won the toss and chosen to
bowl first, with Craig White being left out of the England 12,
while Chris Martin is on drinks duty for New Zealand
the umpires and players make their way on to the field
interestingly it's Michael Vaughan at the non-striker's end instead
of Mark Butcher, opening with Marcus Trescothick to provide a
        left/right hand combination
it's Chris Cairns to take the new ball from the Hadlee Stand End,
with three slips, two gullies, cover point, wide mid off, wide mid
on and a fine leg in place
0.1 Cairns to Trescothick, no run, and not a bad start! on a super line
and length just sliding away a fraction outside off stump from the
seam, Trescothick holds the bat inside the line of the ball
0.2 Cairns to Trescothick, no run, and another ripper! on a back of a
length and Trescothick only just whips the bat inside the line to
        leave it to the keeper
0.3 Cairns to Trescothick, OUT: a brilliant start for Cairns! another
cracking ball sliding on from middle and off and seaming away,
props forward in defence, takes a regulation edge straight through
to Parore, the finger is raised, a formality and Trescothick has
        another

failure on New Zealand soil - it hasn't been a good tour for him so
        far
Mark Butcher the new batsman, effectively opening, but not with the
partner he would've expected prior to the start!
one of the two gullies is moved into a fourth slip position for the
        new man on strike
0.4 Cairns to Butcher, no run, good short lifting ball on off stump,
gets right over the top of it, tapping it down in close on the off
        side in defence
0.5 Cairns to Butcher, OUT: incredible start! shortish ball straightens
alarmingly on Butcher, he's squared right around on the crease,
gets a huge leading edge which flies up in the air, Butler hurries
forward from mid off and slides to take the catch low to the
        ground

England 2 down without a run on the board and still a ball left in
the first over of the Test series!
Nasser Hussain the new batsman, a bit of a delay to get to the
crease, probably only just padded up
0.6 Cairns to Hussain, no run, shortish ball passes safely through the
channel just outside off stump, left well alone to the keeper

Chris Drum to open the bowling from the Port Hills End
four slip, gully, point, wide mid off, wide mid on and fine leg in
        place
1.1 Drum to Vaughan, two runs, runs on the board! shortish ball just
outside off stump, pokes at it and runs it away wide of the slips,
Vincent sprints after it from fourth slip, pulls up quickly well
        short of vacant third man
1.2 Drum to Vaughan, SIX, take that! Vaughan goes on to the offensive,
first two balls faced and he has 8 after losing two partners in
the blink of an eye, short rising straight ball, gets inside the
line nicely and hooks it straight over Cairns' head at fine leg!
1.3 Drum to Vaughan, legbye: one run, full and angling into the legs,
tries to clip it away square but misses, drops down in close on
the leg side, easy single taken as mid on comes forward to field
1.4 Drum to Hussain, no run, props forward in defence to a shortish,
straight ball, drops it down at his feet from a dead bat, not
        wholly convincing defence
1.5 Drum to Hussain, FOUR, overpitched on the toes and Hussain takes it
to the cleaners, sweetly driving through midwicket, has enough gas
to beat the chase from Richardson at mid on
1.6 Drum to Hussain, no run, props forward in defence to a shortish
ball on off stump, nudging it down into the gully on the bounce

2.1 Cairns to Vaughan, two runs, Vaughan's on fire! too full and
straight, clipped away firmly through vacant forward square leg,
easy two taken as long leg comes around to field in the deep
2.2 Cairns to Vaughan, no run, shortish ball outside off stump,
shoulders arms through to the keeper
2.3 Cairns to Vaughan, no run, sharper shortish rising straight ball,
seams back into the body, drops from the thigh pad down in close
        on the off side
2.4 Cairns to Vaughan, no run, shortish ball outside off stump,
shoulders arms through to the keeper, comes back off the seam late
        through to Parore
2.5 Cairns to Vaughan, legbye: one run, shortish ball angling down the
leg side, deflects down just behind square from the pad, easy
        single taken
2.6 Cairns to Hussain, no run, short rising ball from a back of a
length outside off stump, shoulders arms to the keeper

3.1 Drum to Vaughan, legbye: one run, hops across the crease in behind
a shortish, straight ball, taken high on the pad and drops down in
close on the leg side, quick single taken as the bowler is the
        closest fielder to that one
3.2 Drum to Hussain, no run, beaten! lovely quicker shortish ball
sliding on just outside off stump, props forward in defence and it
slides on past the gloves through to the keeper
3.3 Drum to Hussain, no run, a ripper! very similar ball on a tight
line just outside off stump, Hussain is well squared around on the
crease, has a late reactionary dabble, through to the keeper
3.4 Drum to Hussain, no run, stretches well forward, compactly
defending a straight, shortish ball on off stump, playing down in
        close on the off side
3.5 Drum to Hussain, no run, beaten again! a cracker of a shortish ball
just a fraction outside off stump, Hussain is again well squared
around on the crease with little answer to that one, happy to see
it through to the keeper untouched
3.6 Drum to Hussain, no run, props well forward in defence to a
fullish, straight ball, taken on the pad, drops down in close on
        the leg side

4.1 Cairns to Vaughan, SIX, shot! Vaughan isn't wasting time here,
short rising straight ball, hooks superbly again, sends it sailing
over the backward square leg boundary, Drum helpless down at long
        leg
4.2 Cairns to Vaughan, two runs, overpitched on the toes, strongly dug
out wide of Richardson at mid on, quickly back for a good second
as Richardson scampers after it, the return through hitting
Hussain sliding home at the bowler's end
4.3 Cairns to Vaughan, no run, shortish ball outside off stump,
shoulders arms through to the keeper, nips back off the seam late
but Vaughan knows where his off stump is, looking in incredibly
good touch on the limited opportunities he's had on this tour
4.4 Cairns to Vaughan, no run, good ball! a bit fuller outside off
stump, Vaughan leaves well alone, swings away fairly late through
        to the keeper
4.5 Cairns to Vaughan, no run, very full and straight, jams the bat
right down on it, squeezing it straight up to Richardson at mid on
4.6 Cairns to Vaughan, no run, oof! another good'un from Cairns, rising
from a probing length and leaving Vaughan, just keeps the bat
inside the line to leave to the keeper

25/2 after 5 overs, you'd be excused for thinking that this is the
6th ODI and the Tests will start some time next month, but we can
assure you they're in whites and using a red ball out there
5.1 Drum to Hussain, no run, fullish ball on off stump, props well
forward, defending down in close on the off side
5.2 Drum to Hussain, no run, props forward in defence to a fair length
ball on off stump, balloons away from the front pad towards gully
5.3 Drum to Hussain, no run, squared around on the crease in watchful
defence, plays a fullish ball on off stump down in close on the
        off side
5.4 Drum to Hussain, no run, good shortish ball just outside off stump,
shoulders arms to leave to the keeper
5.5 Drum to Hussain, no run, watchfully defends a fullish, straight
ball, firmly stroked back on the leg side of the pitch
5.6 Drum to Hussain, one run, shortish, straight ball, just angles to
leg stump, turned away down to Cairns at fine leg

CJ Drum 3-1-13-0 - Port Hills End
N Hussain 5* (16b 1x4) MP Vaughan 18* (15b 2x6)

6.1 Cairns to Hussain, two runs, a bit too full and angling on the leg
stump, Hussain turns it away well through backward square leg,
they scoot back for a second as Drum has some work down at long
leg to get around to it
6.2 Cairns to Hussain, FOUR, overpitched outside off stump, superbly
driven through mid off, Butler is a bit wide at mid off so it
beats him and races to the rope
6.3 Cairns to Hussain, no run, a beauty! rising off a back of a length
in that ever-so-challenging line just a fraction outside off
stump, Hussain does very well to withdraw the bat well back inside
the line as it swings away through to Parore
6.4 Cairns to Hussain, one run, shortish, straight ball, tucked off the
hip just backward of square on the leg side, Parore is the closest
to it so he runs all the way to square leg to field, prevents a
cheeky second as Hussain searched for it
6.5 Cairns to Vaughan, no run, shortish ball on off stump, Vaughan gets
right into line, firmly defending down in close on the leg side
6.6 Cairns to Vaughan, no run, fullish ball outside off stump, a bit
too wide and angling further away, leaves well alone to the keeper

7.1 Drum to Hussain, no run, shortish ball on off stump, hops on the
crease, chopping an inside edge into the pads, falls away in close
        on the off side
7.2 Drum to Hussain, no run, stretches well forward in defence to a
fullish, straight ball, drops down in close on the leg side from
        the pad
7.3 Drum to Hussain, no run, full and straight just outside off stump,
Hussain stretches well forward, taken on the pad and rebounds away
towards cover point, huge shout from the bowler alone, didn't seem
to be coming back enough and he was a long way forward, Vaughan
        looked for a
quick run but had to go back as Hussain was pre-occupied with
ensuring umpire de Silva's finger stayed down!
7.4 Drum to Hussain, no run, fullish, straight ball, firmly stroked
straight back down the pitch in defence
7.5 Drum to Hussain, no run, short rising ball off a back of a length
just outside off stump, raises the arms well clear to leave to the
        keeper
7.6 Drum to Hussain, one run, hops back in the crease to a shortish
lifting straight ball, tucks it well down in close on the leg side
to take a quick single with so much open space about as a very
        attacking field is set

End of over 8 (1 run) England 34/2
CJ Drum 4-1-14-0 - Port Hills End
N Hussain 13* (26b 2x4) MP Vaughan 18* (17b 2x6)

8.1 Cairns to Hussain, one run, shortish ball seaming into the body,
tucked off the hip down to Drum at long leg
8.2 Cairns to Vaughan, FOUR, props well forward to a fullish ball well
outside off stump, angles the face and runs it away between the
slips and gully, beats two fielders diving towards it
simultaneously, down to the vacant third man boundary, runs
continue to flow thick and fast
8.3 Cairns to Vaughan, no run, shorter ball just outside off stump and
swinging further away, hangs the bat well back out of the way and
just watches it pass through to the keeper
8.4 Cairns to Vaughan, no run, good shortish lifting ball just outside
off stump, leaves well alone to the keeper as it swings away again
8.5 Cairns to Vaughan, one run, shortish, straight ball on off stump,
props forward and just taps it down forward of point, well played
for a comfortable quick single, Vaughan really looking the part
here in no matter what role is thrust upon him
8.6 Cairns to Hussain, no run, good shortish ball which cuts back a bit
alarmingly off the seam to Hussain, well tucked up as it cuts him
in half, drops down in close from the body

CL Cairns 5-1-23-2 - Hadlee Stand End
MP Vaughan 23* (21b 1x4 2x6) N Hussain 14* (28b 2x4)

9.1 Drum to Vaughan, no run, jumps right back to a fair length,
straight ball which just comes back a little, inside edges into
the pad which might've saved him from a louder appeal, drops down
in close on the leg side
9.2 Drum to Vaughan, no run, very good back of a length ball sliding on
just a fraction outside off stump, good seam up bowling, Vaughan
doesn't know too much nor can do too much about that one, just
smiles as it beats him by a mile through to the keeper
9.3 Drum to Vaughan, no run, probes forward in defence to a good length
ball just outside off stump, stabs it down in close on the leg
        side
9.4 Drum to Vaughan, no run, shortish ball outside off stump, hangs the
bat well back out of the way to leave to the keeper
9.5 Drum to Vaughan, legbye: one run, shortish, straight ball, jumps
inside the line of it, trying to glide it away, taken on the pad
and drops just behind square on the leg side, easy single on offer
9.6 Drum to Hussain, no run, Hussain dices a little with danger, shaped
initially to play a fullish ball outside off stump, but then
elects to leave it, comes back off the seam, takes the knee roll,
huge shout for lbw from the bowler, but wasn't coming back
        anywhere near enough

10.1 Cairns to Vaughan, FOUR, shot! drops it in too short, Vaughan is
seeing it like a pumpkin, rocks back and pulls powerfully through
midwicket, not perfectly timed but certainly gave it a clout
10.2 Cairns to Vaughan, no run, fullish, straight ball, gets right in
behind it, strongly driving into the pitch, back to Cairns to
grabs at it on his follow through
10.3 Cairns to Vaughan, (noball) no run, oversteps, shortish ball well
outside off stump, leaves well alone through to the keeper
10.3 Cairns to Vaughan, no run, oh boy oh boy! Vaughan plays and misses,
looking to drive a good fullish length ball just outside off
stump, pretty much goes straight through off the seam, just didn't
extend fully enough to it, through to Parore
10.4 Cairns to Vaughan, OUT: and Cairns gets his man next ball, props
forward to a marginally shorter ball just outside off stump,
straightens off the seam and finds the probing outside edge,
        straight through to the keeper

Match State: Drinks

13.1 Butler to Hussain, no run, beaten! good quick back of a length ball
sliding on just outside off stump, cuts back very late, passing
Hussain who's stuck propped forward on the crease
13.2 Butler to Hussain, FOUR, overpitched outside off stump and Hussain
takes toll, strongly driven along the ground through mid off, too
straight for Cairns posted at extra cover, a collection job
13.3 Butler to Hussain, one run, shortish ball straying to leg stump
this time, glanced straight down to Drum at long leg
13.4 Butler to Thorpe, one run, very full and straight, turned away from

Butler just bowling a bit too full so far, though hasn't been taken
        to for it just yet

Cairns finishes his fine opening spell, albeit a bit expensive but
he got the wickets New Zealand wanted, and Drum turns around to
bowl from the Hadlee Stand End
three slips, gully, deepish point (two-thirds of the way to the
boundary), mid off, wide mid on, square leg and fine leg in place
for the left-handed Thorpe on strike
14.1 Drum to Thorpe, no run, good fullish ball angling across the left-
hander outside off stump, withdraws the bat inside the line to
leave well alone as it moves away from the track
14.2 Drum to Thorpe, one run, shortish lifting straight ball, jumps
inside the line to glance it down to Butler at fine leg
14.3 Drum to Hussain, no run, full on off stump, props well forward to
compactly defend up to Cairns at mid off
14.4 Drum to Hussain, two runs, shortish, straight ball, tucked off the

a very interesting first session here at Jade Stadium, plenty of
runs early on after two wickets in the first over, then things
settled down considerably in the second hour, but England couldn't
quite conserve all seven remaining wickets in the last
period, losing Thorpe with barely quarter of an hour to go through
        a rash stroke
Hussain has come in and played a very good hand, after walking to
the crease after 5 balls with his team 0/2, looking very safe at
the wicket, considering just how much it's moved in the first two
        hours out there
Vaughan played a fine initial cameo, but was done by another good
ball by Cairns to nip his one-dayesque threat in the bud
Cairns has impressed, moving 3 wickets closer to 200 in Tests - now
just a further 3 away from that milestone, while Drum recovered
superbly after being taken for 12 runs from his opening over -
conceding just 7 from his next 10 until Ramprakash took 6
       off his last before lunch
Butler has looked a bit shaky on debut, as might be expected, not
quite getting his length right, mostly too full, but he did settle
down towards the end of his opening spell, generating more pace,
but just couldn't contain enough to warrant further

vacant square leg, easy single taken
48.4 Butler to Foster, no run, interesting! Butler digs in a real short

another interesting session, a similar number of runs, though fewer
wickets (87/2 in 32 overs to be precise), and one of those was the
        firing out of Ramprakash unjustly
Hussain has soldiered on in admirable fashion, leading the innings
to some form of respectability, though he'll want the capable
Foster and the rest of the tail to chip in further
Astle bowled a very good spell this afternoon, using the movement
off the deck to keep the batsmen guessing, and that's really the
sort of wicket it is - keep it there or thereabouts and you'll

2.4 Caddick to Richardson, no run, full and straight on off stump,
leans well forward, defending down in close on the leg side
2.5 Caddick to Richardson, one run, full outside off stump, leans well
forward, easing it to vacant cover, easy quick single taken with
the shot as point comes across to field
2.6 Caddick to Horne, (noball) no run, oversteps, fair fullish ball
swinging away just outside off stump, Horne withdraws the bat well
inside the line to leave to the keeper
2.6 Caddick to Horne, no run, shortish lifting ball outside off stump,
has a look at it before raising the bat well behind his body to
        leave to the keeper again

AR Caddick 2-1-2-0 (1nb) - Hadlee Stand End
MH Richardson 2* (15b) MJ Horne 0* (4b)

3.1 Hoggard to Richardson, no run, shortish, straight ball, tucked off
the hip down in close on the leg side, sharply fielded on the
bounce by Butcher under the helmet at short leg
3.2 Hoggard to Richardson, no run, shortish and rather wide ball
outside off stump, left well alone to the keeper
3.3 Hoggard to Richardson, no run, similar again, a little straighter
but Richardson can safely leave it alone to the keeper again
3.4 Hoggard to Richardson, OUT: quick and full on off stump, Richardson
is only half forward looking to drive it, plays and misses, swings
back in, rapping the pads and a huge appeal for lbw is met with a
deserved raised finger from umpire de Silva

New Zealand 4/1, Partnership of 4
       MH Richardson lbw b Hoggard 2 (19b 0x4 0x6)
       MJ Horne 0* (4b) MJ Hoggard 1.4-0-1-1

a key breakthrough late on the first evening for England, gives
them a helpful sniff for when things resume tomorrow - anything
more tonight would be a real bonus
nightwatchman Daniel Vettori is the new batsman with 14 balls left
        in the day's play
3.5 Hoggard to Vettori, no run, shortish ball outside off stump,
shoulders arms through to the keeper
3.6 Hoggard to Vettori, no run, attempted yorker, and not a bad'un
either, Vettori has to jam the bat right down on it, swinging in
on off stump, defends in close on the off side

End of over 4 (maiden) New Zealand 4/1 (trail by 224 runs)
MJ Hoggard 2-1-1-1 - Port Hills End

shoulders arms through to the keeper
4.2 Caddick to Horne, no run, shortish lifting ball on off stump,

away into the gully, good diving stop made there by Hussain from
        fourth slip
4.3 Caddick to Horne, no run, oooh! a corker ball, full and straight,
Horne didn't know much about that one, just shaves past outside
off stump, Horne playing uncertainly at it from the crease,
        through to the keeper
4.4 Caddick to Horne, no run, very full down the leg side, left alone
        to the keeper
4.5 Caddick to Horne, no run, full and straight, watchfully in behind
it, firmly defending back on the leg side of the pitch
4.6 Caddick to Horne, no run, good ball! sharp and rising off a good
length just outside off stump, Horne squares around and just
manages to withdraw the bat inside the line, through to the keeper

pad, drops down in close on the leg side
5.2 Hoggard to Vettori, no run, very full on off stump, firmly stroked
away to vacant midwicket, interestingly Vettori turns down the run
        - even though there might've been two on offer! wants to protect
        Horne obviously
5.3 Hoggard to Vettori, (noball) no run, oversteps, sharp short rising
ball outside off stump, Vettori has a bit of a swish at it but is
        beaten for pace and bounce

stroked strongly into the deck, bouncing up to short cover

sweetly driven straight down the ground on the off side, lovely
shot to get off the mark this time

well forward, shoulders arms through to the keeper
5.6 Hoggard to Vettori, no run, shortish ball outside off stump,

an interesting first day's play comes to an end, with honours
shared to a fair degree, but New Zealand should feel the happier
of the two sides in the end as the pitch has shown clear signs of
browning off and flattening out as the match progresses
winning the toss and being able to bowl first when it was seaming
about a fair bit in the first session and a half was a boon to the
home side and they take fair advantage of it, aided by a helpful
decision of three through the day
they couldn't have asked for a better start when they saw the
scoreboard with England 0/2 after 5 balls of the match, but
Hussain led the recovery effort, helped by Ramprakash and to a
lesser extent Foster, Thorpe and Vaughan
Hussain was the clear batting star though, 106 and last man to go,
batting through for 80.3 overs of the 81.2 over innings, walking
to the wicket at 0/2 as mentioned before
he looked far more assured than he did in the One-Day International
series, and only provided the odd heart flutter, and one genuine
chance - a sitter dropped by Fleming at slip off Drum when he was
52, and he made it hurt a reasonable amount for New Zealand
all the bowlers were there or thereabouts today, Cairns had a great
start but took some stick from Vaughan, and wasn't seen all too
often at the crease, while Butler had a mixed introduction to Test
cricket, improving as the day went on, but got his length wrong a
        bit too often
the other two seamers were where the control lay for New Zealand,
with Drum getting through a healthy workload for extended spells
and kept it very tight, creating pressure and eventually wickets
Astle too performed this role, bowling more than would've been
expected of him, but proved a handy surprise with two wickets to
        his name also
the wicket of Richardson at the end of the day's proceedings really
helped England's cause, as they'll need to make the most of the
new ball in the morning with the conditions improving for batting
        continually
it got rather dark in the last half hour, with some rain sweeping
across the city, though hasn't yet arrived at the ground, what
part that might play tomorrow is too soon to tell
that concludes our coverage on the opening day of the first
National Bank Series Test between New Zealand and England, please
join us again tomorrow at 10:30am local time (2130 GMT) for day

welcome to Jade Stadium in Christchurch for the second day's play
of the first National Bank Test between New Zealand and England
unfortunately the weather hasn't been kind to us overnight, with
the first few spots of rain falling not long after the close of
play yesterday evening, and that was followed by intermittent
sprinkles into the late evening before a real downpour overnight
there has been a few light showers this morning, but less
threatening than those which preceded them
the ground staff took off the covers about 20 minutes before the
scheduled start of play, and are marking the pitch at present, but
we won't be starting on time while the rest of the ground is
prepped to be ready before we can get underway
the umpires are having a look at the middle, which is presently
roped off, while the England team do their warm-up drills around
        the boundary
the official word has just come through - the umpires will have
another inspection at 11am local time (2200 GMT) with a view to a
start at 11:30am local time - ie. in 25 and 55 minutes time from
        now, respectively
two groundsman's carts are being driven around the outfield now,
with the magic rope being dragged along behind it to deal to the
        moisture embedded in the field
we'll bring you further updates as soon as we hear the news from
        the horse's mouth

Match State: Delay - Day 2 - Wet ground conditions delay start of play

it's now 11:10am local time (2210 GMT) and the umpires have had an
inspection and have decided upon an 11:45am local time (2245 GMT)
start, with a 90-minute first session going until 1:15pm local
time (0015 GMT), normal 40 minute lunch break, followed by
       a 2-hour session going from 1:55pm local time (0055 GMT) to 3:55pm
local time (0245 GMT), then 20 minutes for tea before a final
session of 2 hours 15 minutes from 4:15pm local time (0315 GMT) to
6:30pm local time (0530 GMT), and a scheduled 87 overs to
we will start 15 minutes early tomorrow, at 10:15am local time
(2115 GMT) to make up for the 15 minutes scheduled to be lost
overall today (weather permitting, of course!)
the umpires and players make their way on to the field in cool
conditions, at last we're ready for play here
it'll be Matt Horne to take strike to Andy Caddick bowling from the
Hadlee Stand End, with nightwatchman Daniel Vettori at the non-
        striker's end
three slips, two gullies, extra cover, mid on, short leg and fine
        leg in place
6.1 Caddick to Horne, no run, shortish lifting ball on off stump,
stands tall on the crease to tap it down towards backward point in
        defence
6.2 Caddick to Horne, no run, pushed through very full and straight,
Horne watchfully jams the bat down on it, squeezing it up towards
        mid on in defence
6.3 Caddick to Horne, two runs, shortish ball straying to the leg
stump, tucked off the hip through square leg for an easy couple to
get off the mark as the man under the helmet has to give chase
6.4 Caddick to Horne, one run, strays to the leg side once more, a bit
fuller and Horne turns this one away to vacant wide midwicket for
an easy single, mid on fielding it
6.5 Caddick to Vettori, no run, tight shortish ball on off stump,
defends from the crease, firmly stroking it up to mid off
6.6 Caddick to Vettori, no run, oooh! full and a bit wide outside off
stump, Vettori has a flash at it but swings and misses, through to
        the keeper

End of over 7 (3 runs) New Zealand 12/1 (trail by 216 runs)
AR Caddick 4-2-5-0 (1nb) - Hadlee Stand End
MJ Horne 3* (14b) DL Vettori 4* (11b 1x4)

it'll be Matthew Hoggard to bowl from the Port Hills End
three slips, two gullies, cover, mid on, short leg and fine leg in
        place
7.1 Hoggard to Horne, no run, full outside off stump and swings a fair
amount away, Horne jams the bat down on it, squeezing it back on
        the off side in defence
7.2 Hoggard to Horne, no run, fullish ball outside off stump, moving
further away, shoulders arms to the keeper
7.3 Hoggard to Horne, FOUR, too full and straight, Horne easily
dispatches it off his legs, strongly clipping it along the ground
through vacant square leg, races to the boundary
7.4 Hoggard to Horne, no run, very full and straight, gets in behind
it, firmly stroking it straight back to the bowler in defence
7.5 Hoggard to Horne, no run, oooh! good length ball, a bit shorter and
has Horne playing from the crease, squares around to get in behind
it, plays with soft hands which is what saves it, squirts it off
the outside edge, falling well short of Thorpe in the slips
7.6 Hoggard to Horne, no run, shortish ball outside off stump,
shoulders arms through to the keeper

End of over 8 (4 runs) New Zealand 16/1 (trail by 212 runs)

stump, Vettori withdraws the bat just inside the line to leave to
        the keeper
8.2 Caddick to Vettori, no run, bouncer! well targeted on off stump,
Vettori doesn't have too much difficulty in ducking well
        underneath it though
8.3 Caddick to Vettori, no run, shortish ball angling away from the
left-hander outside off stump, shoulders arms to the keeper
8.4 Caddick to Vettori, no run, fullish ball outside off stump,
        shoulders arms to the keeper
8.5 Caddick to Vettori, legbye: one run, fullish ball swinging back
into the pads, rebounds away to vacant backward square leg for an
easy run as the man under the helmet has to go after it
8.6 Caddick to Horne, legbye: one run, full and angling down the leg
side, very stifled appeal for lbw from some of the field as it
rebounds a fair distance away behind square leg for an easy single

End of over 9 (2 runs, maiden) New Zealand 18/1 (trail by 210 runs)
AR Caddick 5-3-5-0 (1nb) - Hadlee Stand End
MJ Horne 7* (21b 1x4) DL Vettori 4* (16b 1x4)

9.1 Hoggard to Horne, no run, good ball! on a probing length just
outside off stump, swings and seams, Horne pokes the bat out half
at it, just withdrawing late as he's beaten to the keeper
ideal conditions for Hoggard here with the new ball and conducive
        swing conditions
9.2 Hoggard to Horne, no run, shortish ball a bit wider outside off
stump, shoulders arms to the keeper
9.3 Hoggard to Horne, no run, another ripper! excellent line and
length, just challenging Horne in a tight channel a fraction
outside off stump, pitching on line with off and then moving away,
squares around and just withdraws the bat inside the line in time
9.4 Hoggard to Horne, no run, squares around a little in defence again,
shortish ball on off stump, tapped down in close on the off side,
cover quickly comes in to field to prevent any
