Date-stamped : 07 Jul96 - 22:16 Tour Match: Yorkshire back on even keel By D. J. Rutnagur at Headingley Second day of three: South Africa A (21-3) trail Yorkshire (331) by 210 THERE were two stages during Yorkshire`s innings when they might have wished they had put out a fuller side to face the South Africans, who bowled with zest in a chilly wind on a slow pitch on what was effectively the opening day of their tour, Wednesday`s play having been washed out. The new ball made early inroads, the victims being David Byas and Anthony McGrath, two first-team regulars, and there was a minor collapse following the breach of a lively third-wicket partner- ship of 124 between Craig White and Richard Blakey. But a breezy 59 by Bradley Parker, a pugnacious 33 by Alex Morris and the defiance of Richard Stemp led Yorkshire to a respectable score. The conditions were more amenable to seam bowling, as was em- phasised when the South Africans batted for the last 10 overs. But the main damage was done by wrist-spinner Paul Adams who, though times at expensive - he was hit for three sixes - split the partnership between White and Blakey, bowling the former through the gate with a chinaman. White invited his fate by play- ing back when he should have been forward. Byas, in need of a big score - it was 10 innings ago that he passed 50 - opened the innings and was first out, lbw to Roger Telemachus. In the following over, McGrath was caught hooking Schultz, who did not attempt to bowl at full pace. While White and Blakey were accumulating runs with total facili- ty, it looked as if the tourists` bowlers were still trying to locate the right length to bowl at in English conditions, and it must be said to their credit they did settle down to greater accuracy as the day progressed.
