Date-stamped : 23 Jul96 - 02:17 Tour Match Glamorgan v South Africa 'A' Cardiff 17,18 July 1996 ====> REPORT (Day 1, 17 Jul 1996) (Electronic Telegraph, UK) Crookes century sparks recovery By Edward Bevan at Cardiff First day of three: Glamorgan (96-5) trail South Africa A (346) by 250 runs INNINGS of 105 from Derek Crookes and 99 from Hylton Ackerman led the tourists` recovery at Sophia Gardens yesterday after they had slumped to 41 for four in the 14th over. After being dimissed for 346, South Africa A reduced Glamorgan to 96 for five at close of play. Wicketkeeper Nic Pothas took four catches, three off Jacques Kallis. Crookes reached his hundred from 77 balls - the second-fastest of the season - while Ackerman contributed to a fifth-wicket partnership of 180 in 32 overs. Steve Watkin, in a spell of two for five from 12 balls, and Owen Parkin, with two wickets in his first over, had made early in- roads, but Crookes dominated proceedings, with 74 runs coming from boundaries. After he was bowled by Parkin, Ackerman and Pothas added 56 for the sixth wicket before Ackerman, attempting to leg-glance Steve Barwick for the run to reach his hundred, was stumped down the leg side. Pothas became one of David Hemp`s three victims in 16 deliveries as the tourists lost their last four wickets for 14 runs. In trouble at one point with the scoreline reading 41 for 4, the tourists recovered due to some neck or nothing batting from Crookes and Ackerman, who added 180 off just 32 overs for the fifth wicket. Steve Watkin, with 2 for five in his first two overs, and Owen Parkin, who took two wickets in his first over, had done the early damage for the home county. A late order slump saw South Africa A lost three wickets in 16 deliveries, but the tourists promptly struck back to reduce Glamorgan to 96 for five, with one-day star Jacques Kallis do- ing the bulk of the damage with three wickets. The visitors might have contemplated batting again to give their batsmen some practice out in the middle but their decision to field was justified as they completed their first win of the tour against county opposition. Apart from Hugh Morris and Matthew Maynard, Glamorgan in- cluded their front-line batsmen, but no one had the application or technique to counter a competent, but hardly threatening, at- tack. Jacques Kallis bowled his medium pacers effectively for a match analysis of six for 41, while the left-arm spin combina- tion of Paul Adams and Nico Boje teased and tormented Glamorgan`s batsmen in the second innings. Source :: Electronic Telegraph (http://www.telegraph.co.uk) ====> REPORT (Day 2, 18 Jul 1996) (Rediff On The NeT, India) South Africa A inflict innings defeat on Glamorgan By A Correspondent Proving that they had the same killer instinct that has made their seniors the most feared of Test-playing nations, the South Africa A side on Thursday crushed Glamorgan by an innings and 44 runs. The tourists, after rattling up 346 all out on day one of the three-day game, had reduced the home county to 96 for five that same evening. In the morning of day two, the South African bowlers picked up where they had left off, taking the remaining wickets in quick time and terminating the Glamorgan innings for just 165. South Africa enforced the follow on, and with one-day stars Jacques Kallis and Paul Adams in prime form, Glamorgan - who were without England star Mathew Maynard - folded up for 137 in the second innings, giving the visitors a mammoth triumph inside of two days.
