West Indies break Aussie tour duck with narrow win
Daily News - Friday 08, November 1996

PERTH, Australia, Thursday - Shivnarine Chanderpaul anchored the West Indies to their first victory in three tour matches when they pipped Western Australia by one wicket with two balls to spare on Thursday.

Chanderpaul stroked 91 from 111 balls, but it was left to tail-ender Ian Bishop to hit the winning boundary in the final over.

In reply to Western Australia's 235 for six in 50 overs, the tourists scored 237 for nine in 49.4 overs after sending the home side into bat.

Acting captain Brian Lara, leading West Indies for the second time in as many days in place of Courtney Walsh, fell cheaply for the second match in a row.

The stylish left-hander managed only five runs after hitting just seven in Wednesday's crushing nine-wicket loss in a rain-shortened limited overs match against the same opponents.

West Indies made heavy weather of the victory target after a 92-run third-wicket stand between Chanderpaul and Carl Hooper, who contributed 51.

Chanderpaul's innings included nine fours and a six.

Their fielding was equally unconvincing, with four catches going to ground in addition to numerous fumbles in the outfield.

Earlier, Western Australia built their innings around a 128-run second wicket stand between Mike Hussey, who scored 56, and Justin Langer, who top scored with 79.

West Indies, who lost their opening fixture against a Chairman's XI on Monday, take on Western Australia in a three-day first-class fixture starting on Friday. Western Australia
