Date-stamped : 28 Jan95 - 18:38 Pakistan v Natal, Tour Match played at Kingsmead, Durban, 4-7 January 1995 ====> Day 1, 4 Jan 95 A 138-run stand in just 107 minutes by Natal's sixth-wicket pair Dale Benkenstein and Derek Crookes was the highlight of the opening day. Benkenstein, the 20-year-old captain, and Crookes savaged the Pakistan bowlers during the final session, helping Natal to 391. Pakistan were two for no wicket at the close. Crookes, in particular, was merciless on anything loose. He plundered 83 off 89 balls with 10 fours and two sixes. Benkenstein's 76 came from 125 balls and included nine fours and two sixes. Pakistan's batting blushes were somewhat spared by number 10 Waqar Younis, who made 55 runs (off 55 balls, 3x6) and shared a ninth wicket stand of 88 with Mansoor Elahi (37), thus saving the follow-on. Waqar then removed Doug Watson for nought, but when bad light ended play Natal were 73 for one - 217 ahead (Hudson is not out with 30 odd runs). Natal's best bowling came from Lance Klusener, who took four wickets for 63 runs, and Ross Veenstra, who took three for 39. A fine century from Neil Johnson left Natal well-placed to beat Pakistan after the third day of their four-day match at Kingsmead on Friday. Johnson scored 114. By the close the visitors had been reduced to 81 for three, still 411 runs short of an unlikely victory. Scores: Natal 391 and 347-7.
