Date-stamped : 27 Nov94 - 10:27 New Zealand vs South Africa, Test 1 played at the Wanderers, Johannesburg, 25,26,27,28,29 Nov 1994 ====> Day 3, 27 Nov 94, Lunch New Zealand retained their tight grip on the first Test against South Africa on Sunday, as seamer Simon Doull dismissed overnight batsmen Daryll and Jonty Rhodes in four balls. Brought into the attack in the 13th over of the day, Doull struck in his second and third overs, with Cullinan on 58 and Rhodes on 37, to have South Africa on the rack at 148-6 at the Wanderers. Richard Snell (16) and Craig Matthews (4), both caught by Martin Crowe off Matthew Hart, soon followed to leave the home side pre- cariously placed on 210-8 at lunch, still 201 runs behind the Kiwis` first innings score of 411. Crowe`s two catches brought his first-class total to 66 and saw him overtake Jeremy Coney`s New Zealand record of 64. Still clinging on for South Africa at lunch however, was gritty wicketkeeper Dave Richardson (41), who went into the Test with a fractured right thumb and who seemed determined to steer the home side to the 212 needed to avoid a follow-on. With Richardson was Clive Eksteen, who held firm for 20 minutes for his solitary run. Contributed by vasa (Vasanthan.Dasan@Central.Sun.COM)
