Date-stamped : 03 Nov93 - 05:54 Eng v R.O.W. July 14 1993 SIMMONS SPARKLES IN THE RAIN West Indian Phil Simmons followed his first day century for the Rest of the World with a super 58 against an England XI before rain washed out play. This second one day match at the Jesmond Festival was reduced to 40 over a side and the Rest of the World made 149 4 before the rain set in. Essex's Mark Ilott impressed with figures of 1 13 off four overs while Phil DeFreitas returned 0 13. Contributed by The Management (help@cricinfo.com) West Indian batsman Phil Simmons, who scored a sparkling century in Tuesday's win over an England XI, followed it up with an attractive 58 for the Rest of the World on Wednesday. But rain spoiled spectators' hopes of further entertainment and the second one-day match in the Jesmond festival had to be abandoned after Rest of the World made 149 for four off 25 overs. Graham Gooch, captaining the England XI, took none for 34 in four overs but held on to a fine running catch at short fine leg to remove Simmons. The opener's half-century came off only 41 balls and included two sixes and four fours. Thanks to vasa Contributed by murari (venka@*me.utexas.edu)
