Family affair
Three of Australia's substitute fielding options today had impressive father-and-son links, starting with Michael Buchanan, the son of the national coach John. The junior Buchanan, who made his one-day debut for Queensland this season, got on for a few overs while Ryan Broad, the boy of former state player Wayne, was used instead of Ricky Ponting, making a lasting mark by catching Andrew Strauss at fine leg. The bright red-haired Alister McDermott, whose dad is Craig, was also employed in the extended squad as a runner of towels and drinks. Mitchell Johnson, the designated 12th man, is busy with Queensland at the MCG.
Band aids corporate sector
Brisbane band Powderfinger showed their love of cricket by naming their 2003 album Vulture Street and they have proved it again by hiring a corporate box for the first Test. Bernard Fanning, the lead singer, popped in on day three and if the musicians were here before play this morning they would have been able to listen to their own song Sunsets on the stadium sound system.
