Cricket Australia has appointed Eugenie Buckley as the tournament director of the 2009 women's World Cup in New South Wales. Buckley, a qualified lawyer, starts on 7 January 2008.
She has just completed a six-month contract with the ICC where she assisted in finalising the ESS media rights deal and commercial program as well as the staging of the World Twenty20 in South Africa.
Prior to cricket, she worked in soccer for FFA and was closely involved in the establishment of the A-League and Australia's participation in the FIFA World Cup in Germany 2006. Buckley has also worked in rugby union, including as the head of legal and commercial when the ARU staged the Rugby World Cup in 2003.
"I'm very excited to take on this new role and I'm really looking forward to the challenges of putting together a successful World Cup," she said. "We really want to showcase a fantastic tournament comprising the best female cricketers from around the world and leave a legacy to continue to develop and improve the game for women, not just in Australia, but also internationally."
